That’s part of why I don’t like 10: he’s far too human.
I read this in a comment on a blog post today and its not the first time I’ve seen this particular reason for disliking Ten (WHAT, people dislike TEN?? Nutters.). It’s also not the first time I’ve thought it’s a big steaming pile of crap.
Generally, these are people who are Classic Who fans. They loved the show back when the Doctor was truly alien. He had an alien planet full of alien people just like him and everything was very ALIEN.
Consider this: when RTD brought DW back in 2005, he changed EVERYTHING about the Doctor. This character, once the epitome of alien behaviour and reasoning, had been fundamentally changed by the trauma of the Time War. The things he had to do, the choices he had to make, and the home and people he lost… they caused a cataclysmic change in his character. The very thing that made him alien in the first place NO LONGER EXISTED. He was lost and drifting and bitter.
He came to Earth, as he often did because he was so fond of Earth. He didn’t go to Mars or Bluerghsf or the Sixth Moon of Batfarts. He came to Earth. His second home and now his ONLY home. And he met Rose and she became his people. No, he’s not human, but he’s no longer quite as ALIEN either.
That’s what we saw with the character arc of Nine. Rose showed him a new way to be, gave him a new home and a new purpose. Ten was born from her love for him and he embraced what she’d given him. Yes, he was more human. That’s called character development. It made sense for who he had been, what he’d had to do and who he was now.
Then, all the sudden, Ten regenerates into Eleven and Moffat takes over the show. Moffat is a Classic Who fanboy who preferred to view the Doctor as he had been: alien. Overnight, 4+ years of beautiful characterisation were erased. Lessons were unlearned. History and canon were rewritten.
I would love to see Matt Smith play a more human Doctor. I think he’d do brilliant things with it. But Moffat would never stand for it. He wants the Doctor to be akin to a god, an alien superhero. And I fully believe the integrity of the show has suffered as a result.
